Extreme sneezing

Sneezing is a protective reflex that clears irritants from the nose. Allergic rhinitis often causes repeated bursts with an itchy nose, itchy or watery eyes and clear discharge. House dust mite allergy may be worse indoors or on waking, while pet allergy may flare after animal contact. A common cold can bring sneezing with sore throat, cough or feeling unwell. Dry air, smoke, strong scents and sudden temperature changes can irritate the nose without an infection.

Notice where and when sneezing starts, and reduce exposure to smoke, fragrances, dust and known animal triggers. Wash hands, ventilate rooms and use saline spray if nasal dryness is contributing. A pharmacist can discuss allergy medication, including whether an antihistamine or nasal treatment is appropriate for you. Use medicines exactly as directed and check before combining products. Arrange a review if symptoms keep disrupting sleep, work or exercise, or if the trigger is unclear.

Seek urgent help if sneezing occurs with swelling of the lips or tongue, wheezing, breathing difficulty, faintness or widespread hives. Book medical advice for persistent nosebleeds, severe facial pain, fever with worsening illness, or symptoms that continue despite avoiding triggers. A clinician can examine the nose and consider allergy or infection management.
