Extreme runny nose and COVID-19

COVID-19 may cause watery nasal discharge, congestion, sore throat, cough, tiredness, fever or changes in smell. Some people have only mild upper-airway symptoms. Allergic rhinitis often brings repeated sneezing, itchy eyes or an itchy nose, while a common cold may develop with sore throat and cough. Sinusitis can add facial pressure or thicker discharge. The pattern, timing and contact history are more useful than the amount of fluid from your nose.

Consider a COVID-19 test when symptoms begin, especially after a known exposure or when you also feel unwell. Follow current local advice about staying home and avoiding close contact while you have a respiratory illness. Drink fluids, rest, use saline nasal spray, and wash your hands after blowing your nose. Avoid sharing towels or tissues. Do not start antibiotics because nasal discharge is present; they do not treat viral infections. If symptoms persist, recur around dust or pets, or interfere with sleep, arrange a primary-care assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, chest pain, new confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, or inability to stay awake. Arrange prompt medical advice if fever is persistent, you are becoming dehydrated, symptoms are worsening rather than easing, or you have a condition or treatment that weakens your immune system. A clinician can decide whether testing, examination or treatment is needed.
