Short answer

Extreme keratosis pilaris causes dense, rough, or inflamed follicle bumps that need consistent gentle care and sometimes prescription treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Small, rough bumps centred on hair follicles
Helpful habit
Moisturise after bathing and avoid picking

What it can mean

Keratosis pilaris develops when keratin builds up around hair follicles, creating small rough bumps commonly on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. A severe-feeling flare may be widespread, itchy, red, or emotionally distressing. Scratching, picking, harsh scrubs, and close shaving can inflame the follicles and make the texture more noticeable. Similar bumps can be ingrown hairs, folliculitis, or another rash, so pus, marked pain, or sudden change deserves an examination.

What to do

Use short lukewarm showers, a fragrance-free cleanser, and an emollient soon after bathing. Apply products consistently rather than scrubbing harder. A clinician may suggest an exfoliating moisturiser, topical retinoid, or another plan suited to your skin. Chemical peels or laser hair removal may be considered in selected cases, but they can irritate active inflammation and should be planned with a qualified professional. Do not squeeze the bumps.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology review if the bumps are painful, draining, rapidly spreading, leaving dark marks or scars, or failing to improve with gentle moisturising. Seek prompt care for fever, warmth, rapidly increasing redness, or a tender area that suggests infection. Ask for assessment before treating bumps on the face, in children, or during pregnancy.

Questions for your doctor

Are these bumps keratosis pilaris or ingrown hairs? Which moisturiser or active ingredient fits my skin? Would a retinoid, peel, or laser approach be appropriate, and how should irritation be managed?

Questions people ask

Does scrubbing remove severe keratosis pilaris?

Hard scrubbing can worsen inflammation. Gentle cleansing and regular moisturising are safer starting measures.

Can keratosis pilaris be confused with ingrown hairs?

Yes. A clinician can distinguish follicle plugging from hairs growing back into the skin or an inflamed follicle.
