What should you know about extreme itching in eyes?

Itching may come from airborne allergy, a product that touched the eyelids, dry or irritated skin, or inflammation along the eyelid edge. Rubbing can increase swelling and may scratch the clear surface of the eye. A rash around the eyes can also occur with contact dermatitis or atopic dermatitis; scabies and hives are other possibilities when itching affects more areas. Wash your hands before touching the area, pause new eye makeup and skin products, and use a cool clean compress over closed eyes. Do not rub, scrape, or share towels.
