What should you know about extramedullary myeloma?

Possible effects depend on the affected area. A mass near the head or neck may cause pressure, swallowing changes, or nasal symptoms; involvement elsewhere can cause pain, swelling, or altered organ function. Tests may include PET-CT or other imaging, blood and urine studies, and a biopsy when the diagnosis or location needs clarification. The team also checks kidney function, blood counts, calcium, and bone health.

Treatment is tailored to the wider myeloma picture and the sites involved. Options can include Chemotherapy, Targeted Therapy, CAR T-Cell Therapy, or Autologous Stem Cell Transplant in selected situations. Radiotherapy may help control a specific painful or pressure-causing mass. Bone-Strengthening Therapy may support skeletal health when bones are affected. Ask which aim applies: reducing the overall myeloma burden, controlling a local site, or relieving symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help for new weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe back pain, confusion, chest pain, breathlessness, or inability to pass urine. Contact the treatment team quickly for fever, persistent vomiting, dehydration, rapidly enlarging swelling, or new difficulty swallowing or breathing.
