What should you know about extraintestinal amoebiasis treatment?

Amoebiasis is caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica. Although it may begin in the intestine, it can sometimes spread through the bloodstream to another organ, most often the liver. Fever, pain under the ribs on the right side, feeling unwell, or ongoing diarrhoea may occur, but symptoms can overlap with other infections. A bowel symptom does not establish that the infection has spread.

See a clinician for testing if extraintestinal disease is suspected. Assessment may include an examination, stool testing, blood tests, and imaging chosen for the symptoms. Treatment commonly uses prescription anti-parasitic medicine; the exact choice and course depend on the site and severity of infection. A second medicine may be needed to clear parasites remaining in the intestine after treatment of disease outside it. Complete the prescribed course, avoid self-starting leftover Antibiotic Treatment, wash hands carefully, and use safe food and water practices to reduce spread.

Get urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, faintness, confusion, breathing difficulty, yellowing of the eyes, or high fever with shaking chills. Blood in stool, signs of dehydration, or inability to keep fluids down also require prompt assessment. A painful swollen abdomen after travel or an infection needs review rather than home treatment alone.
