What should you know about an external fetal heart monitor?

Short answer

An external fetal heart monitor uses sensors on your abdomen to record your baby's heartbeat and uterine activity.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the monitoring shows

A clinician usually places two soft sensors around your abdomen with adjustable bands. One detects fetal heart sounds; the other senses tightening of the womb. The tracing can show how the heartbeat changes when your baby moves or during contractions. A monitor may be used during pregnancy, labour, or an assessment after concerns such as reduced movement. The test does not enter the womb, and the sensors can be repositioned if the signal is unclear.

How to prepare and participate

Wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen and tell the team about discomfort, skin sensitivity, or difficulty lying in one position. You may be asked to press a button when you feel movement. Try to remain comfortable and mention if the bands feel too tight. Monitoring time varies because the team may need a clear, continuous tracing. A quiet period on the strip does not by itself explain your baby's wellbeing; the clinician interprets the pattern alongside your pregnancy and symptoms.

When to seek urgent maternity advice

Contact your maternity unit promptly for reduced or absent fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, or severe abdominal pain. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe breathlessness, or feeling seriously unwell. Do not wait for a home device or a scheduled appointment to assess a new urgent concern.

Questions to ask

Ask why monitoring is recommended, how long it may take, what the tracing means, and what happens if the signal is difficult to obtain. You can also ask when you should return or call if movements change.

Questions people ask

Does an external monitor go inside the body?

No. Its sensors sit on the abdomen and record signals from outside the body.

Can I move during monitoring?

Small position changes may be possible, but ask the clinician so the sensors continue recording clearly.
