Exophytic glioma

Exophytic describes the direction of growth rather than the tumour grade. An outward-growing mass may extend toward nearby spaces, but imaging is needed to show its exact position and relationship to important brain structures. Symptoms depend on the area involved and may include headache, seizures, weakness, changes in speech, balance or vision, or altered behaviour. These symptoms have many possible causes. The tumour’s cell type, grade, molecular features and spread are assessed separately from the word exophytic.

A specialist team may review brain imaging, neurological findings and, when safe and useful, tissue from a biopsy or operation. Treatment can involve Brain Tumour Surgery to remove or sample the mass, followed by Radiotherapy or other care depending on the pathology and location. Ask for a clear explanation of the goals: diagnosis, reducing pressure, controlling growth, preserving function, or easing symptoms. Keep a record of seizures, headaches, medicines and changes in movement or speech.

Get urgent medical help for a first seizure, a seizure that does not stop, sudden weakness or numbness, new confusion, trouble speaking, loss of consciousness, repeated vomiting, or a rapidly worsening severe headache. Contact the treating team about gradual changes in balance, vision, memory or personality. Do not drive if seizures or sudden neurological episodes have occurred until a clinician gives specific advice.
