What should you know about excessive sneezing and runny nose?

Allergic Rhinitis commonly presents with repeated sneezing, clear drainage, nasal itching and watery eyes. House Dust Mite Allergy may flare around bedding or dusty rooms, and Pet Allergy may follow contact with an animal. A Common Cold can bring sneezing with sore throat, cough or tiredness. Influenza and COVID-19 can include nasal symptoms with fever, aches, cough or a change in general health. Symptoms lasting beyond an expected illness, or facial pressure with thick drainage, can occur with Sinusitis. These symptoms alone cannot identify one cause.

Saline spray or rinse may clear irritants and mucus. Rest, drink fluids, wash your hands and avoid smoke or strong fragrances. Keep notes about timing, rooms, animals, meals and new products. If allergy seems possible, reduce the relevant exposure and ask a pharmacist about suitable antihistamine options. Check instructions carefully, particularly for children, pregnancy, long-term conditions or other medicines.

Seek emergency help if sneezing is part of a rapidly worsening allergic reaction with breathing difficulty, throat tightness, swelling or faintness. Contact a clinician for severe facial pain, persistent fever, dehydration, bloody drainage without an obvious cause, or symptoms that are not settling. Recurrent episodes affecting sleep or concentration deserve a planned review.
