Everyday Spotting in Early Pregnancy: What to Know

Spotting refers to a small amount of blood noticed on toilet tissue or underwear rather than flow that needs a pad. Note whether it is pink, brown, or bright red, how long it lasts, and whether pain, dizziness, fever, or unusual discharge occurs alongside it.

Early-pregnancy spotting can have a harmless explanation, such as a sensitive cervix that bleeds after sex or an examination. It can also occur with changes around implantation or with irritation or infection. Bleeding may instead signal a pregnancy complication, including an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage, so colour and amount alone cannot establish the cause.

Bleeding between periods has several possible causes outside pregnancy too, including cervical dysplasia, uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, and sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia. These links can help you understand those conditions, but they do not diagnose the reason for bleeding during your pregnancy.

Contact your obstetrician, midwife, or maternity service and describe when the spotting began, how much blood you see, its colour, and whether it followed sex or an examination. Use a pad if you need to track the amount; avoid inserting anything into the vagina until you have received advice. Do not start medicines or stop prescribed treatment without checking with your clinician.

Your clinician may ask about your last menstrual period, previous pregnancies, blood group, pain, and infection symptoms. Assessment can include an examination, pregnancy-hormone blood tests, or an ultrasound depending on how far along the pregnancy is and what you report.

Seek emergency care now for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided lower-abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, fever, or feeling seriously unwell. These symptoms need prompt assessment because an ectopic pregnancy or significant blood loss can become dangerous.

Even without red-flag symptoms, arrange same-day advice if bleeding continues, returns, contains clots or tissue, or is accompanied by cramps, pain, or offensive discharge. Keep any pregnancy records available and do not drive yourself if you feel faint.
