What should you know about Euvichol cholera vaccine?

Euvichol is taken by mouth as part of a vaccination programme advised for a particular travel, outbreak or public-health setting. The clinic will explain the schedule, preparation and whether another dose is due. It is designed to reduce the risk of cholera, but protection is not a reason to drink untreated water or eat food kept in unsafe conditions.

Cholera can cause sudden, profuse watery Diarrhoea and rapid fluid loss. The vaccine cannot treat diarrhoea from cholera or another infection. Anyone who becomes unwell still needs prompt attention to fluids and medical advice.

Follow the instructions given by the vaccination service, including any advice about food or drink around the dose. Get urgent medical help for signs of severe dehydration, such as confusion, fainting, extreme weakness, very little urine or inability to drink. Severe diarrhoea may require IV Fluid Therapy in a healthcare setting.

Seek prompt assessment for persistent watery diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, blood in stool, fever with worsening illness or illness after travel to an affected area. Children, older adults and people with other medical conditions can deteriorate quickly.
