What should you know about etiology of rhabdomyolysis?

Short answer
Rhabdomyolysis can result from severe muscle injury, strenuous exertion, heat, medicines, infection, or prolonged pressure on a muscle.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main process
- Breakdown of skeletal muscle fibres
- Useful clue
- Dark urine with marked muscle pain or weakness
What the cause means
When muscle cells are damaged, proteins and other substances can enter the blood. A crush injury, fall, seizure, intense unaccustomed exercise, heat illness or being unable to move for a long period can trigger this process. Some medicines, toxins, metabolic problems and infections are additional possibilities. The trigger is not always obvious, so clinicians may ask about recent exercise, injuries, illness, alcohol or drug exposure and medicines.
Muscle soreness after exercise is often ordinary post-exercise discomfort, but rhabdomyolysis is a different concern when pain or weakness is marked, swelling develops, or urine becomes unusually dark. The urine change can reflect muscle pigment and should not be ignored.
What to do next
Stop strenuous activity and arrange prompt medical assessment if rhabdomyolysis is possible. Do not restart training to test the muscle. A clinician may examine you and check blood and urine, kidney function and the likely trigger. Bring a list of medicines, supplements and substances, and describe when the symptoms began. Treatment depends on the cause and may include monitored fluids and observation.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent care for severe muscle pain or weakness with dark or reduced urine, significant swelling, confusion, faintness, fever, or symptoms after heat exposure, a crush injury or prolonged immobility. These features can signal a complication affecting fluid balance or the kidneys.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what trigger is most likely, whether blood and urine tests are needed, which medicines or supplements should be paused, when activity can resume, and which changes in urine, pain or strength should prompt immediate help.

Questions people ask
Can exercise cause rhabdomyolysis?
Yes. Very intense or unfamiliar exertion, especially with heat or dehydration, can injure muscle and trigger it.
Is dark urine after exercise normal?
