What should you know about the causes of osteosarcoma?

Osteosarcoma arises from cells that make immature bone. It often starts in a long bone near a joint, though it can occur in other bones. The change that begins the tumour usually develops during a person’s lifetime and is not caused by an injury. Some inherited conditions can increase susceptibility, and previous radiation to a bone can be relevant, but many people have no identifiable risk factor.

Pain, swelling, or reduced movement near a bone can have many explanations, including sports injuries and benign growths. A symptom does not establish osteosarcoma. Imaging and a carefully planned biopsy are used together because the biopsy route can affect later surgery.

Seek assessment for persistent or progressive bone pain, a firm swelling, reduced joint movement, or a fracture after minor force. Bring information about prior radiation, unusual fractures, inherited conditions, and the timing of symptoms. Assessment may include an X-ray, MRI, scans of other body areas, and biopsy by a team familiar with bone tumours.

If osteosarcoma is confirmed, care commonly combines systemic treatment with surgery chosen for the tumour’s position and relationship to nearby structures. Chemotherapy may be used before or after tumour removal surgery. The team also considers function, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and the person’s overall health.

Arrange prompt clinical review when bone pain does not settle, wakes you, or is accompanied by swelling or a change in movement. Seek emergency care after a suspected fracture, severe uncontrolled pain, numbness or weakness in a limb, or a limb that becomes cold or changes colour.
