What should you know about etiology of mumps?

The virus enters through the nose or mouth and multiplies in the upper airways. It commonly causes painful swelling of salivary glands near the cheeks and jaw, fever, headache and tiredness. Swollen glands have many causes, so the symptom alone does not confirm mumps.

A person can pass measles to others before the rash is obvious. People who are unvaccinated or have not developed immunity are more vulnerable. Measles is different from a mild, localised rash because it can affect the whole body and may lead to complications, particularly in young children, pregnant people and those with weakened immunity.

Call a GP practice before attending and describe gland swelling, fever, exposure and MMR vaccination history. Avoid close contact and sharing personal items while waiting for advice. Rest, drink fluids and choose soft foods if chewing is painful.

MMR vaccination is the main preventive measure and also helps protect communities by reducing opportunities for the virus to spread. A GP consultation can clarify whether testing, monitoring or vaccination is appropriate after an exposure.

Seek prompt assessment for painful gland swelling with fever. Get urgent help for severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, seizures, severe abdominal pain, testicular pain or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Ask whether the symptoms fit measles, how long isolation should last, whether household contacts need assessment, and whether vaccination or post-exposure advice is needed. Bring the dates of previous MMR doses and the first day of symptoms.
