Short answer

Measles is caused by the measles virus, which spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cause
Measles virus
Spread
Airborne respiratory particles
Typical pattern
Fever and respiratory symptoms followed by a rash

How infection happens

The virus enters through the nose or mouth and multiplies in the airways before spreading through the body. Fever, cough, runny nose and red, irritated eyes may come first; a widespread rash can follow. Swollen glands may occur with many infections, so that finding alone does not identify measles.

A person can pass measles to others before the rash is obvious. People who are unvaccinated or have not developed immunity are more vulnerable. Measles is different from a mild, localised rash because it can affect the whole body and may lead to complications, particularly in young children, pregnant people and those with weakened immunity.

What to do if you suspect it

Call a GP practice before arriving and describe the fever, rash, cough, exposure and vaccination history. This allows the team to reduce contact with other patients. Avoid close contact, shared indoor spaces and school or work until a clinician gives advice. Rest, drink fluids and use only symptom medicines suitable for you.

MMR vaccination is the main preventive measure and also helps protect communities by reducing opportunities for the virus to spread. A GP consultation can clarify whether testing, monitoring or vaccination is appropriate after an exposure.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical advice for a suspected measles rash with fever, particularly after contact with a confirmed case or travel. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, severe drowsiness, confusion, dehydration, a seizure or a rapidly worsening child. Keep the person away from vulnerable contacts while arranging care.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the symptoms fit measles, how long isolation should last, whether household contacts need assessment, and whether vaccination or post-exposure advice is needed. Bring the dates of previous MMR doses and the first day of symptoms.

Questions people ask

Can measles spread before the rash?

Yes. A person may be contagious before the rash is recognised, which is why suspected cases should call ahead before attending a clinic.

Does a rash always mean measles?

No. Many illnesses cause rashes. Fever, respiratory symptoms, exposure history and vaccination status help a clinician assess the cause.
