TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Sticky electrodes sit on intact skin near, but not directly over, the painful area. The device sends controlled pulses that feel like tingling. Some people find this changes how pain signals are experienced; relief varies and may fade after the device is removed. It is an aid for symptoms, not a substitute for finding out why pain is present.

A TENS unit should not cause sharp pain, burning or skin injury. The electrode position and programme depend on the body area and the reason for pain. Instructions supplied with the device and advice from a physiotherapist or clinician should guide use.

Check the skin before and after use, start at a low intensity and increase only to a comfortable tingling level. Keep electrodes clean, avoid broken or irritated skin, and switch the unit off before moving pads. Do not place pads across the front of the neck, over the eyes or mouth, or across the chest. Ask a clinician before use if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, epilepsy or pregnancy. Do not use it while driving, bathing or sleeping.

Urgent assessment is needed for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, sudden limb weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or pain after a major injury. If pain repeatedly returns or limits walking, sleep or daily tasks, arrange an examination rather than relying on stimulation alone.
