What should you know about estrogen and gallstones?

How the structures involved in Gallstones differ from normal

Short answer

Oestrogen can change bile composition and gallbladder movement, which may contribute to gallstones in some people.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Mechanism
Oestrogen can affect bile cholesterol and gallbladder emptying
Symptoms
Pain, nausea, vomiting, or indigestion may occur with a blockage
Hormones
Do not change prescribed treatment without clinical advice

The link between hormones and gallstones

Gallstones are solid deposits that form in the gallbladder. Oestrogen may increase cholesterol released into bile and can reduce how efficiently the gallbladder empties. Pregnancy, hormone therapy, and other factors may therefore alter the conditions that allow stones to form, but a hormonal link does not prove that oestrogen caused an individual stone. Many stones cause no symptoms. When a stone blocks a bile duct, it may cause upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or indigestion.

Practical next steps

Tell a clinician about abdominal symptoms and any pregnancy, contraceptive, or menopause hormone treatment. They may ask when pain occurs, examine you, and arrange imaging or blood tests. Avoid stopping prescribed oestrogen without advice. Until reviewed, note food triggers and symptom timing, and choose meals that you tolerate rather than making drastic dietary changes. A GP consultation can help decide whether symptoms need imaging, monitoring, or referral.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent assessment for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, or pain spreading to the back. These signs can indicate a blocked or inflamed biliary system, or pancreatitis. Do not wait for a routine review if you feel faint, confused, or unable to drink enough fluid.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit gallstones, whether hormone treatment should be reviewed, which imaging is appropriate, and which warning signs require emergency care. Mention previous stones, pregnancy, and any history of pancreatitis.

Do not stop it yourself. Discuss the benefits, risks, and alternatives with the prescribing clinician.
