Erythematous oral lichen planus

Oral lichen planus is an inflammatory condition affecting the lining of the mouth. The erythematous form may look red and raw, with soreness on the cheeks, gums, tongue, or other areas. Spicy, acidic, salty, or rough foods can make the sensation more noticeable.

Some people also have white lacy lines or patches alongside the red areas. Mouth soreness can have many causes, including irritation, infection, medication reactions, or dental problems, so a persistent or changing patch should be examined rather than identified from appearance alone.

Use a soft toothbrush and gentle toothpaste, keep regular dental care, and rinse with water after meals. Choose softer, cooler foods while the mouth is sore and avoid smoking, alcohol-based mouthwash, and products that sting. Tell your dentist or clinician about new medicines, dental materials, or flavouring products if symptoms began after a change.

A clinician may prescribe a corticosteroid applied in the mouth or discuss another treatment according to the examination. Do not place skin creams inside the mouth unless specifically instructed. Keep follow-up appointments so persistent areas can be reassessed.

Arrange prompt dental or medical review for a sore, red, or ulcerated area that persists, repeatedly returns, bleeds, forms a lump, or interferes with eating. Seek urgent help if swelling affects swallowing or breathing, or if you cannot keep fluids down. New symptoms deserve review even when you already have a lichen planus diagnosis.
