Erythema Nodosum Pictures: Features to Recognise

Erythema nodosum usually appears as several deep, rounded or slightly raised tender areas, often across the fronts of the lower legs. Early lesions may look red or pink and feel warm or bruised. As they settle, their colour can change in a bruise-like way. The surface generally remains intact rather than forming a crust or open ulcer.

Colour, lighting, skin tone, camera settings, and the age of a lesion can change how a picture looks. Other conditions can also cause red, painful, swollen lumps. For that reason, a photograph can help show progression to a clinician but cannot replace an examination and medical history.

If you photograph the area for a clinician, use clear light, include a wider view and a closer view, and record when the image was taken. Do not delay care while comparing the picture with online examples. Note tenderness, fever, joint pain, recent illness, new medicines, and whether more nodules are appearing.

Until reviewed, reduce rubbing and pressure, rest when needed, elevate the legs, and try a cool compress. Do not scratch, squeeze, massage, or puncture the lesions. A clinician can discuss pain relief and, in selected cases, oral corticosteroid treatment after assessing possible causes and safety concerns.

Arrange an examination for new painful lumps, uncertain-looking lesions, repeated episodes, or symptoms that are not settling. Seek urgent care for severe one-sided swelling, rapidly spreading redness, high fever with marked illness, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. A picture cannot safely assess these warning signs or rule out problems needing immediate treatment.
