Erythema Nodosum Management

Erythema nodosum is an inflammatory reaction in the deeper skin that produces tender, warm lumps, often over the shins. It can occur after an infection, with an inflammatory illness, after a medicine, or without an obvious trigger. A clinician may ask about recent sore throat, bowel symptoms, joint pain, medicines and general health. Examination helps distinguish these nodules from infection, bruising or other skin conditions.

Resting the affected legs, raising them when comfortable and using cool compresses may reduce throbbing. Loose clothing avoids rubbing. Do not squeeze or massage the lumps. A clinician may suggest an anti-inflammatory pain medicine if it is suitable for your stomach, kidneys, pregnancy status and other medicines. Treating an underlying infection or inflammatory condition is often central. In selected cases, prescribed oral corticosteroid treatment may be discussed.

Arrange medical review if painful nodules are new, spreading, recurring or limiting walking, because the cause may need checking. Seek urgent help for severe illness, breathing difficulty, faintness, a rapidly worsening red area, pus, or a very painful swollen leg. Fever with a rapidly changing lesion also warrants prompt assessment.
