Where Erythema Nodosum Appears: What to Know

The front of the lower legs is a familiar site for erythema nodosum, but inflammation can also involve the thighs, arms, or other areas. Nodules may be present on both sides or in more than one region. Location is one clue, not a diagnosis: a painful red lump can also reflect infection, a cyst, trauma, a medication reaction, or another inflammatory condition. The depth, tenderness, colour change, associated illness, and examination findings provide the wider picture.

Take a dated photograph in consistent light and note where each nodule appears, how sore it is, and whether the skin remains intact. Tell your clinician about recent infections, digestive or joint symptoms, new medicines, and injuries. Rest and elevate an affected limb when useful; a cool compress may ease discomfort. Avoid squeezing or massaging lumps. Treatment depends on the cause and your health history; oral corticosteroid treatment is an option only for selected patients after medical review.

Seek prompt assessment for spreading redness, rapidly increasing swelling, pus, severe pain, fever, or a new ulcer. Get urgent help for chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, or sudden swelling of one leg. A location that is unusual for you, or a lump that keeps enlarging, also deserves direct examination.
