Erythema Nodosum and Infection: What to Know

Erythema nodosum is inflammation in deeper skin tissue rather than a pocket of pus. A recent throat, chest, or stomach infection can precede the nodules, sometimes after the initial illness has started to improve. The skin over a nodule may be warm, red, and sore, which can look like a bacterial skin infection. The distinction matters because antibiotics treat a confirmed bacterial infection, while erythema nodosum care focuses on its trigger and inflammation.

Tell a clinician about recent fever, sore throat, cough, diarrhoea, urinary symptoms, travel, sick contacts, and medicines. Mention when the nodules began compared with the illness. Keep the area clean, avoid rubbing it, rest if walking is uncomfortable, and elevate the legs when possible. Do not start leftover antibiotics or steroid medicine without advice. Assessment may include an examination and targeted tests based on your symptoms. If a triggering infection is identified, treatment is directed at that infection; oral corticosteroid treatment is reserved for selected situations after a clinician has considered infection.

Seek prompt care for high fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe tenderness, pus, red streaks, confusion, or feeling markedly unwell. Urgent assessment is needed for breathing difficulty, chest pain, or fainting. A painful red nodule with systemic illness should not be assumed to be erythema nodosum without examination.
