Erythema Nodosum in the Upper Thigh: What to Know

Erythema nodosum is an inflammatory reaction in the deeper skin and fatty tissue. It commonly affects the lower legs, but a nodule can occur on the thigh or another area. The skin may look red or bruised as the inflammation settles, and several lumps can appear over a short period. An upper-thigh nodule can resemble an insect bite, a boil, a bruise, or another skin condition, so its location alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Arrange a clinical examination, especially if the lump is new, painful, enlarging, or accompanied by fever, joint aches, sore throat, cough, stomach symptoms, or recent medication changes. Record when it appeared, whether more nodules developed, and any recent infection or illness. Rest the affected leg, elevate it when comfortable, and use a cool compress wrapped in cloth. Do not squeeze, pierce, or massage the nodule. A clinician may treat the underlying trigger and discuss symptom relief; oral corticosteroid treatment may be considered in selected cases.

Seek prompt medical care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, spreading redness, drainage, a high fever, or difficulty walking. Get urgent help for sudden leg swelling with breathlessness or chest pain. These features can point to problems other than erythema nodosum and need direct assessment.
