Erysipelas in swine

Swine erysipelas is caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae and may occur in young or adult pigs. Acute illness can bring fever, listlessness, reduced appetite, and distinctive raised skin patches that may look red, purple, or diamond-shaped. A less sudden form can lead to swollen joints, stiffness, and poor movement. Heart involvement may develop in some animals. Because visible skin lesions are not present in every case, a change in behavior or unexpected death also deserves veterinary attention.

Call the herd veterinarian and record which pigs are affected, when signs began, recent introductions, transport, injuries, and any medication already given. Follow biosecurity directions: separate affected animals when advised, restrict unnecessary movement, clean shared tools, and use suitable protective clothing. Treatment decisions depend on examination, herd context, and local veterinary requirements. Ask about a prevention program, including vaccination where appropriate, and correct conditions that create stress or skin injury. Never repurpose human antibiotics or another animal's prescription.

Urgent veterinary review is needed when multiple pigs become ill, deaths occur unexpectedly, a pig cannot stand, or fever and purple skin lesions appear quickly. Do not open or move carcasses unnecessarily before receiving instructions. A handler with a new painful skin infection or fever after contact with pigs should contact a healthcare professional and explain the exposure.

Ask whether testing is needed, how long affected pigs should be monitored, whether the herd needs a coordinated plan, and which cleaning and vaccination measures fit your setting. Confirm medicine handling, withdrawal requirements, and the warning signs that should trigger immediate reassessment.
