Erysipelas in pigs: treatment explained

In pigs, erysipelas refers to infection with the bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. It can appear as sudden illness, fever, weakness, reluctance to move, or raised diamond-shaped skin lesions. Some animals develop joint problems or heart complications, while others may die suddenly without obvious skin findings. The condition can affect individual animals or spread through a group. This veterinary disease is different from human erysipelas, despite the shared name, so human skin-care advice cannot replace an animal-health plan.

Contact a veterinarian promptly and describe the number of affected pigs, their temperature or behavior changes, skin marks, recent movements, and any deaths. Follow instructions about separating sick animals, cleaning equipment, limiting movement, and protecting handlers. Treatment may involve a veterinarian-selected antimicrobial, supportive care, and decisions about the rest of the herd. Do not use leftover human or livestock medicine, change the dose, or stop early without veterinary direction. A veterinarian can also discuss vaccination and ways to reduce recurrence.

Request urgent veterinary help for sudden deaths, several ill pigs, severe weakness, inability to stand, breathing difficulty, high fever, or rapidly appearing purple or diamond-shaped skin lesions. Keep people and animals away from a dead animal until the veterinarian gives handling instructions. Anyone who handles sick pigs and develops a painful red skin patch or fever should obtain medical advice and mention the animal exposure.
