What should you know about eruptive granuloma annulare?

Granuloma annulare is a skin condition that can form smooth, firm or slightly raised bumps arranged in rings, arcs, or clusters. The surface may be less scaly than many rashes, and itching can vary. Eruptive disease means lesions are more numerous or appear in a broader pattern. Similar-looking bumps can have different causes, so a clinician may inspect the distribution, texture, colour, and whether the lesions are changing.

Use gentle cleansing and moisturising, and avoid picking or harsh exfoliation over the bumps. Record where new lesions appear and whether they itch, hurt, or become scaly. Treatment depends on the extent and location. A clinician may discuss a topical corticosteroid for selected areas or an intralesional steroid injection for an individual lesion. These treatments require tailored instructions because potency, placement, and skin thickness affect local effects.

Arrange a medical review when lesions spread quickly, become painful, ulcerate, bleed, or are accompanied by fever or feeling unwell. Seek assessment sooner when the pattern is new and the diagnosis is uncertain, because ring-shaped lesions can resemble infections and other inflammatory conditions. Do not apply leftover steroid or antifungal medicine repeatedly without knowing what is being treated.
