What should you know about erosive lichen planus on tongue?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition that can affect skin and moist linings, including the mouth. The erosive form may appear as red, tender patches or shallow ulcers on the tongue, sometimes with white lacy edges. Eating spicy, acidic, salty, or rough foods can make discomfort worse. It is different from ordinary itchy skin or skin bumps, although those features can occur when lichen planus affects other areas.

Arrange an examination with a dermatologist, oral-medicine clinician, or dentist who can inspect the tongue and check for other affected sites. Use a soft toothbrush, choose cool or soft foods, and avoid tobacco, alcohol, and products that sting. Treatment may include a prescribed topical corticosteroid applied inside the mouth; more extensive disease may call for oral corticosteroid treatment. Do not start, stop, or share steroid medicine without advice.

Seek prompt medical care if pain prevents drinking, swallowing becomes difficult, bleeding does not settle, or a sore persists or changes. Urgent help is appropriate for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or signs of dehydration such as very dark urine and marked dizziness.

Ask whether the tongue changes need a biopsy, which medicine is suitable for the mouth, how to apply it safely, and when follow-up should happen. Mention new medicines, dental materials, smoking, and symptoms elsewhere on the body.
