What should you know about equine tetanus vaccine?

Equine means related to horses. A product labelled for equine use is designed, tested, and dosed for horses, so it should not be injected into a person. Tetanus is caused by a toxin made by bacteria that can enter through a wound, especially a puncture or wound contaminated with soil, dust, or manure. The vaccine used for people contains tetanus toxoid, which trains the immune system without causing tetanus.

Do not confuse a horse vaccine with equine tetanus antitoxin. Antitoxin is a different type of product made from horse antibodies and may be considered in limited medical situations when human tetanus immune globulin is unavailable. It can cause allergic or other serious reactions, so it must only be given by a qualified clinician after an individual assessment.

Wash your hands, then rinse the wound with clean running water and gently remove visible dirt if it comes away easily. Do not put an animal vaccine or veterinary medicine into the wound or your body. Contact a healthcare professional promptly if the wound is deep, punctured, heavily contaminated, caused by an animal, or if you cannot confirm your tetanus vaccination history. A clinician may clean the wound further and recommend a human tetanus-containing vaccine or immune globulin based on the wound and your previous doses.

If you were accidentally given an equine product, keep the packaging or take a clear photograph of its label and seek urgent medical advice. Tell the clinician the product name, amount if known, route of injection, and time it was given. Do not assume that an animal product provides reliable protection for a person.

Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, faintness, widespread hives, or rapidly worsening symptoms after an injection, because these can signal a severe allergic reaction. Get urgent medical assessment for jaw stiffness, difficulty swallowing, painful muscle spasms, severe stiffness, or trouble breathing after a wound. Tetanus symptoms require immediate treatment and should not be managed at home while waiting to see whether they settle.

A wound can need medical review even when it looks small. Prompt assessment is particularly sensible when dirt or manure may have entered it, the injury occurred outdoors or around horses, or vaccination records are missing.
