Short answer

Epilepsy awareness month helps people recognise seizures, respond safely, challenge stigma, and support appropriate medical care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why awareness matters

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that can cause recurring seizures. Seizures do not all look the same: a person may become unresponsive, stare, make repeated movements, stiffen, shake, or experience unusual sensations while remaining aware. Misunderstanding can lead to fear, embarrassment, unsafe first aid, or exclusion from work, school, and social activities.

Awareness focuses on practical knowledge rather than assumptions. A person having a seizure is not necessarily in pain or aware of what others are saying. Seizures are not contagious, and a person cannot swallow their tongue. Respectful language and privacy after an episode matter.

Useful actions

Learn the basic response: stay calm, protect the person from nearby hazards, cushion the head, loosen tight clothing around the neck, and time the seizure. When movements stop, place the person on their side if they are not fully awake and stay nearby until recovery. Never restrain them or put food, drink, or objects in their mouth.

Ask a person with epilepsy how they prefer to be supported, especially if they have an individual seizure plan. Share reliable first-aid information with family, teachers, and colleagues. Encourage assessment for unexplained episodes; a [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) can be a starting point.

When emergency help is needed

Call emergency services when a seizure lasts longer than five minutes, another seizure begins before recovery, breathing remains abnormal, or there is a serious injury. Seek urgent help for a first suspected seizure, a seizure in water, pregnancy, diabetes, or a person who does not return to their usual state. Keep the area safe while help is coming.

Questions for your doctor

How can I recognise my seizure pattern? Do I need a written seizure plan? Which activities require precautions, and what should family or coworkers do if a seizure happens?

Questions people ask

What is the most helpful thing to learn?

Learn how to time a seizure, clear hazards, protect the head, and know the circumstances that require emergency services.

Should I film a seizure?

Only if it can be done safely and privately without delaying help. A clinician may find an accurate witness account useful.
