What should you know about eosinophilia and skin rash?

Eosinophils are white blood cells involved in immune responses. A raised count can occur with allergic disease, a reaction to a medicine, some infections, or inflammatory disorders. The result alone does not identify the cause of a rash. Clinicians consider when the rash began, its shape and distribution, itching, fever, new medicines, travel, animal or food exposures, and other blood results. Possible skin diagnoses include Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, and Drug Rash, but these cannot be confirmed from a description alone.

Arrange a medical review and bring the laboratory report, a list of medicines and supplements, and photographs showing how the rash has changed. Do not stop an essential prescription without advice, but report every new medicine, including one started weeks earlier. Use gentle, fragrance-free skin care and avoid applying multiple new treatments at once. Your clinician may repeat blood testing or arrange targeted tests based on the history and examination.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, painful mouth or eye sores, or rapidly worsening illness. Get urgent medical advice for fever with a widespread rash, facial swelling, yellowing of the skin, severe weakness, or involvement of several organs. A prompt review is also appropriate when a rash follows a new medicine.
