Enzymes for lactose intolerance: what to know

Short answer
Lactase enzymes can help break down lactose in dairy foods, reducing symptoms for some people with lactose intolerance.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- 作用
- Lactase splits lactose so it can be digested more easily.
- Symptoms
- Bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhoea may follow lactose.
How lactase works
Lactose is the natural sugar in milk. Lactase is the enzyme that splits it into smaller sugars for absorption in the small intestine. When the body makes too little lactase, undigested lactose reaches the colon, where it can draw in water and be fermented by bacteria. This may cause bloating, abdominal pain, gas, or diarrhoea. Lactase products add enzyme around a dairy meal, but response varies and they do not treat milk-protein allergy.
Using enzymes thoughtfully
Follow the product directions and take the enzyme at the recommended time with the dairy food. Start by observing your response to a small, familiar portion rather than assuming every product or meal will suit you. Lactose-free milk and naturally lower-lactose foods may be alternatives. Avoid removing all dairy without a nutrition plan, because calcium and vitamin needs still matter. A nutrition counsellor can help protect variety while identifying your personal tolerance.
When symptoms need review
Arrange medical advice for persistent diarrhoea, weight loss, blood in stool, nighttime symptoms, vomiting, or pain that is severe or unrelated to dairy. Swelling, hives, wheezing, or breathing difficulty after milk suggests an allergic reaction rather than lactose intolerance and needs urgent help if severe. Testing may be considered when the pattern is unclear or dietary changes have not helped.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit lactose intolerance, whether food intolerance testing is useful, and how to trial lactase safely. Ask how to maintain calcium intake, whether another digestive condition could explain the symptoms, and which warning signs should prompt review.

Questions people ask
Do lactase enzymes cure lactose intolerance?
They can help with a dairy meal, but they do not make the body produce more lactase or remove the underlying tendency.
Can I use lactase for a milk allergy?
No. Lactose intolerance and milk-protein allergy are different problems; seek clinical advice for allergic symptoms.
