What should you know about an ENT otoscope?

The device has a light and a small viewing tip. A clinician may use it to see wax, irritation, swelling, fluid, discharge, a foreign object, or changes to the eardrum. The examination can help connect symptoms with what is visible, although ear discomfort can have causes that need other tests.

Do not place cotton buds, pins, or drops in the ear unless a clinician has advised them. Tell the clinician about ear pain, discharge, reduced hearing, dizziness, recent swimming, injury, or previous ear surgery. Arrange prompt medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe pain, blood or pus from the ear, a lodged object, marked dizziness, or swelling behind the ear. Seek urgent help if ear symptoms occur with facial weakness, confusion, or a serious injury.
