What should you know about Engerix hepatitis B vaccine?

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that can affect the liver and may spread through infected blood or body fluids. Vaccination prepares immune defences before exposure. It is preventive care, not a treatment for an existing infection. Fatigue or dark urine can occur with liver illness but does not identify hepatitis B by itself; a clinician may need an examination and tests such as a liver function test.

Tell the vaccinator about previous vaccine reactions, allergies, immune problems, pregnancy, current illness and any hepatitis B exposure. Bring any vaccination record available so the schedule can be chosen accurately. Remain for the observation period advised by the clinic and keep the next appointment if further doses are recommended. Mild soreness or tiredness can occur after vaccination; follow the clinic's advice for comfort.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, widespread hives, collapse or severe dizziness after vaccination. Contact a clinician promptly for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, marked fatigue, abdominal pain or vomiting, especially after a possible exposure. These symptoms need assessment and are not proof of a vaccine reaction or hepatitis B.
