What should you know about endonyx onychomycosis?

The affected nail may look white, opaque or discoloured, and the plate can become rough or brittle. Endonyx infection is a clinical pattern, not a conclusion that can be made from colour alone. Trauma, psoriasis and other nail disorders can look similar. A clinician may trim or scrape nail material for microscopy or laboratory testing before choosing treatment. Athlete’s foot can coexist and may help spread fungus between skin and nails.

Keep feet clean and dry, change damp socks, avoid sharing nail tools and have tools cleaned after use. Do not pick or aggressively file the nail. Depending on the extent of infection, a clinician may discuss topical antifungal treatment, oral antifungal treatment or laser treatment for nail fungus. Nail surgery is reserved for selected problems and does not replace treatment of the infection. Complete the recommended course and expect healthy nail growth to take time.

Arrange an assessment for a nail that becomes painful, lifts, drains, smells unusual or changes quickly. Seek prompt care if redness spreads into surrounding skin, swelling is significant or you have diabetes, poor circulation or reduced immunity. A dark streak, bleeding or a single changing nail also needs medical review because not every discoloured nail is fungal.

Ask whether testing is needed, which nail or skin findings support fungus, how long treatment may take, and how liver health or other medicines affect oral treatment. Discuss whether the skin between the toes needs treatment too, and how you will know the infection has cleared rather than simply waiting for the nail to look normal.
