Endometrial thinning after menopause

The endometrium is the tissue lining the inside of the womb. After menopause, the ovaries produce less oestrogen, so the lining usually loses the cycle of monthly growth and shedding. A thin measurement is therefore often an expected menopausal change. The meaning depends on why the scan was done, your symptoms and medicines; dryness, polyps, hormone therapy and other pelvic conditions may need separate consideration.

Ask what the measurement means in the context of your symptoms and whether follow-up is needed. Report spotting, pink discharge or bleeding, and mention hormone therapy, tamoxifen or blood-thinning medicine. Keep the scan report and a simple symptom diary. If there is no bleeding and your clinician is satisfied with the assessment, treatment may not be needed for the thin lining itself.

Arrange prompt review for any vaginal bleeding after menopause, repeated spotting or pelvic pain. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, faintness, marked weakness or severe pain. A thin scan result should not be used to dismiss new symptoms; the clinician may decide whether examination, repeat imaging or tissue sampling is appropriate.
