What should you know about pain at the end of your thumb?

A sudden sharp pain may follow a crush, cut, sprain or impact. Throbbing pain with redness, warmth or swelling can involve the skin, nail or a local infection. Burning, pins and needles or reduced sensation may reflect nerve irritation. Pain triggered by gripping or repeated thumb movement can involve a tendon or joint.

Pain along the thumb side of the wrist and base of the thumb can be a common presentation of /conditions/de-quervain-tenosynovitis/. That condition is different from pain confined to the fingertip, so location, movement and examination help separate them.

Protect the thumb from forceful gripping and repetitive tapping for a short period. Use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for brief intervals if it is swollen, and keep any wound clean and covered.
