What should you know about emergency tetanus shot?

Tetanus is caused by bacteria that can enter broken skin, especially through punctures, contaminated wounds, burns, or tissue damaged by a bite or crush injury. The decision about a vaccine dose depends on the wound’s features and your recorded immunisations. Some injuries need wound cleaning and a booster; certain higher-risk situations may need another protective treatment. The vaccine does not replace careful wound care, and it is not used to treat established tetanus.

Rinse visible dirt from a minor wound with clean running water, apply gentle pressure for bleeding, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not probe deeply, pour harsh chemicals into the wound, or try to remove an embedded object. Seek medical assessment promptly for a deep, punctured, crushed, heavily contaminated, or animal-caused wound. Tell the clinician when the injury happened and show any vaccination record you have.

Go to urgent care for uncontrolled bleeding, loss of feeling or movement, a wound over a joint, a deep puncture, a retained object, or signs of infection such as spreading redness, increasing swelling, pus, or fever. Emergency help is needed for trouble swallowing, jaw stiffness, painful muscle spasms, severe weakness, or breathing difficulty, which can be signs of serious illness.
