Eligard for prostate cancer: what to know

Eligard contains leuprolide and is given as an injection on a planned schedule. It suppresses signals from the brain that normally prompt the testicles to make testosterone. This is called androgen-deprivation therapy. Lower testosterone may slow or control [Prostate Cancer](/conditions/prostate-cancer/), depending on the cancer's stage and biology. Treatment can cause hot flushes, reduced sexual desire, erectile difficulty, tiredness, mood changes, loss of muscle, and changes in bone strength. Your team may monitor symptoms, blood tests, and bone health.

Keep injection appointments and tell the oncology team about heart disease, diabetes, mood symptoms, bone problems, or medicines you take. Eligard may be combined with other treatments such as [Radiotherapy](/treatments/radiation-oncology/radiotherapy/) or [Brachytherapy](/treatments/radiation-oncology/brachytherapy/), depending on the treatment plan. Do not stop or delay injections without discussing it with the prescriber.

Report new severe back pain, leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or inability to pass urine urgently. These symptoms can signal pressure on nerves or urinary blockage. Contact the treatment team about chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, severe depression, or a sudden change in blood sugar.

Ask how long Eligard is planned, how response will be assessed, which side effects need attention, and how exercise, calcium, vitamin D, or bone monitoring fit your care. Ask whether surgery, radiotherapy, or other systemic options may be relevant.
