What should you know about an electronic otoscope?

An electronic otoscope lets a clinician view and sometimes record the ear canal and eardrum on a screen. The enlarged image can make it easier to discuss what is seen with you, and may support comparison during follow-up.

The clinician gently places the otoscope tip at the entrance of the ear canal, directs the light inside, and looks for findings such as wax, irritation, fluid, discharge, or changes to the eardrum. The device does not itself diagnose the cause of an ear problem; the image is interpreted alongside your symptoms and medical history.

Tell the clinician about ear pain, discharge, reduced hearing, recent injury, or previous ear surgery. Do not put cotton buds or other objects into the ear before the visit, because they can irritate the canal or push wax deeper. A child may need reassurance and a still position while the image is taken.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe ear pain, sudden hearing change, blood or pus from the ear, a foreign object, or marked dizziness. Seek urgent help if ear symptoms occur with facial weakness, confusion, severe headache, or a serious injury. An electronic image should not delay assessment when symptoms are severe.

You can ask what was visible, whether wax or inflammation affected the view, whether the other ear was different, and whether you need a hearing assessment or follow-up. Ask how to protect the ear while it heals and which changes should prompt another review.
