Electrolysis requires a probe to enter the follicle accurately, followed by energy delivered at an appropriate setting. Aiming at the wrong depth or angle can cause burns, bleeding, infection, pigment change, or scarring without treating the follicle effectively. Sterility is also difficult to maintain when a device, skin, hands, and surrounding surfaces are not prepared correctly.

Home products may not work like professional electrolysis equipment, and labels can use similar language for different technologies. Treatment is especially unsuitable over moles, warts, active acne, eczema, open skin, or unexplained lumps. Sudden coarse hair growth may indicate hirsutism or another issue that needs assessment rather than cosmetic self-treatment.

Patch testing does not remove the risk of injury to the treatment area.
