Electrology hair removal: what to know

A practitioner inserts a sterile probe alongside a hair, delivers energy at the follicle, and removes the treated hair with sterile forceps. The aim is to disable the growth tissue while limiting injury to surrounding skin. Because hairs are not all in the same growth phase, appointments are repeated as new target hairs become visible.

Brief heat, stinging, redness, or small swollen areas can follow a session. Healing varies by body site, skin sensitivity, treatment intensity, and whether the area is rubbed or exposed to sun. Electrology can be useful when precise treatment is needed, including for some light-coloured hairs.

Use a qualified practitioner who explains hygiene, probe choice, treatment settings, and realistic follow-up. Arrive with the hair long enough to identify and grasp if requested, and tell the practitioner about medicines, active skin disease, a tendency to keloid scars, or previous reactions. Afterward, keep the area clean, avoid picking, and follow the recommended pause from makeup, friction, swimming, or heat.

If new coarse facial or body hair is accompanied by cycle changes, acne, or voice changes, ask a clinician about hirsutism and possible causes. Hair removal does not address a hormonal driver.

Arrange medical advice for increasing warmth, spreading redness, pus, worsening pain, fever, or wounds that do not settle. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing trouble or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. New raised scars or persistent dark or pale patches also deserve review.
