Short answer

In an older adult, a runny nose during meals is often a food-triggered nasal reflex, but persistent or new symptoms deserve assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical pattern
Watery discharge begins during or soon after eating.

Food, timing, nasal symptoms and associated signs.

What it can mean

Eating, especially hot, spicy or strongly flavoured food, can stimulate nerves in the nose and cause thin watery discharge. This is called gustatory rhinitis and is not the same as a food allergy. Dry air, smoke, fragrances and some medicines can also irritate the nasal lining. Allergic Rhinitis may bring sneezing, itching or blocked nose, while a Common Cold, Influenza, COVID-19 or Sinusitis may add cough, fever, facial pressure or thicker mucus. Pet Allergy and House Dust Mite Allergy tend to cause symptoms beyond mealtimes.

Age-related changes, reduced nasal moisture and difficulty swallowing can make meal-time nasal symptoms more noticeable. A clinician can review the pattern, medicines and any choking or breathing symptoms.

Useful steps at home

Keep a brief note of the foods, temperature, timing and other symptoms involved. Eat slowly, choose cooler food for a trial period, and avoid smoke or scented sprays around meals. Gentle nose blowing and saline nasal spray may help clear watery discharge; ask a pharmacist which product suits you, particularly if other medicines or nasal problems are present. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice.

When to seek care

Arrange a GP review if the runny nose is new, troublesome, one-sided, persistent, associated with repeated nosebleeds, reduced smell, facial pain or unexplained weight loss. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread hives, faintness, severe breathing difficulty, choking or inability to swallow. Fever, marked weakness or confusion in an older adult also warrants prompt medical advice.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be gustatory rhinitis or a medicine effect? Which symptoms would suggest allergy or infection? Is saline treatment appropriate with my health conditions? Should swallowing or dental problems be checked?
