What should you know about elbow heat rash?

Heat rash may produce small bumps, prickling, itch, or redness where sweat and warmth are held against the skin. Elbow folds, tight sleeves, and prolonged contact with damp fabric can encourage it. A similar-looking skin rash may instead reflect eczema, contact irritation, infection, or another condition, especially when there is marked scale, a ring-shaped edge, pus, or symptoms outside hot conditions. The appearance and timing help a clinician separate these possibilities.

Move to a cooler environment, rinse gently with cool or lukewarm water, and pat dry. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change damp sleeves. Avoid oily occlusive products, fragranced products, scratching, and vigorous exfoliation while the area is irritated. A bland moisturiser may help when dryness is present; a clinician may recommend emollient therapy or a short course of topical corticosteroid when inflammation is significant. Use medicines exactly as directed.

Seek medical advice if the rash is spreading, persistent, very painful, intensely swollen, or producing blisters, crust, or pus. Get prompt care for fever, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly worsening allergic-looking reaction. If cooling and gentle care do not improve the elbow rash, an examination can identify whether it is truly heat rash or another skin condition needing different treatment.
