Effects of tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, often from a viral infection and sometimes from bacteria such as those causing Strep Throat. The throat may look red, and the tonsils can become enlarged or develop white patches. Swollen glands in the neck, bad breath, headache, and reduced appetite can accompany the illness. Earache may happen because throat inflammation shares nearby nerves; it does not necessarily mean the ear is infected.

Most uncomplicated episodes improve with supportive care, but symptoms can make eating and drinking difficult. Repeated episodes or persistent enlargement deserve a clinical review.

Rest and take frequent sips of water or other suitable fluids. Soft foods, cool drinks, or warm drinks may soothe the throat. Avoid smoke and other irritants. Use only age-appropriate pain or fever medicines and follow the label or a clinician’s instructions. Antibiotic Treatment helps only when a bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed; do not use leftover antibiotics.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, or trouble opening the mouth. Arrange a GP Consultation if fever persists, symptoms are getting worse, dehydration is developing, or episodes keep returning. A clinician can examine the throat and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.
