Effects of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis commonly affects the small joints of the hands and feet, but knees, shoulders and other joints can also be involved. Hand swelling, finger stiffness and joint pain may make gripping, dressing or opening containers difficult. Morning joint stiffness that lasts beyond the time it takes to get moving can signal active inflammation. Ongoing inflammation may damage joint surfaces, tendons or nearby bone and can reduce strength and range of motion.

Some people also experience fatigue, poor sleep or a general unwell feeling. Symptoms can vary, but repeated swelling deserves assessment even if pain comes and goes.

Book a clinical review when joint swelling, stiffness or hand difficulty persists. Treatment aims to calm inflammation and preserve function; anti-inflammatory medication may help symptoms but is not suitable for everyone. A clinician can review kidney, stomach, heart and pregnancy considerations before recommending it. Gentle range-of-motion work, activity pacing, heat for stiffness and an occupational or physiotherapy plan may support daily tasks.

Seek prompt care for a suddenly hot and swollen joint, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Get urgent help for new weakness, loss of sensation, severe neck pain with neurological symptoms, chest pain or difficulty breathing. Contact your rheumatology team when swelling is increasing or usual treatment is no longer controlling symptoms.
