How measles affects the body

Measles is highly contagious. The illness can cause tiredness, reduced appetite and swollen glands before or alongside the rash. Complications may include ear infection, chest infection and dehydration; serious complications can affect the nervous system. Infants, pregnant people and people with weakened immune systems need particular medical attention.

A rash with fever can have several causes, so contact a clinician before attending a waiting room. Explain possible exposure and vaccination history so the service can advise on safe assessment.

What to do if measles is suspected

Call a GP service before arriving and follow its infection-control instructions. Keep the unwell person away from others, especially babies and people who cannot receive certain vaccines. Encourage fluids and use only symptom medicines suitable for the person’s age and health.

A GP consultation can assess symptoms and discuss testing or monitoring. MMR vaccination helps prevent measles and may be discussed for people who are not fully protected.

When to seek urgent care

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, severe dehydration, unusual drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, a stiff neck or a child who is difficult to wake. Call ahead so staff can reduce exposure to other patients.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the symptoms fit measles, how long isolation is needed, which contacts need advice, how to monitor hydration, and whether MMR vaccination is appropriate.
