What should you know about the effect of polio on the body?

Poliovirus may cause a mild illness or no obvious symptoms, but it can also reach nerve cells that control movement. Weakness may affect an arm, leg, or several muscle groups, sometimes unevenly. Paralysis can develop quickly and may interfere with walking, posture, or everyday tasks.

If muscles used for breathing or swallowing are affected, the illness becomes an emergency. Some people who had paralytic polio later develop new weakness, muscle fatigue, pain, or reduced stamina after years of stability. New symptoms need assessment because they can have causes other than past polio.

Seek medical assessment for new weakness, difficulty walking, swallowing changes, or unexplained muscle fatigue. Care may involve checking strength and breathing, supporting mobility, treating pain, and planning rehabilitation that avoids exhausting affected muscles.

Keep vaccination records available and ask whether you and household members are up to date. Childhood Immunisation is a key prevention service. Do not share needles, food, or close-contact items during a suspected infectious illness without receiving local clinical guidance.

Call emergency services for sudden or worsening weakness, trouble breathing, inability to swallow, choking, blue lips, or marked drowsiness. These signs can indicate involvement of muscles needed for breathing or airway protection. Urgent assessment is also needed for rapidly developing paralysis, even if there is no fever.
