What should you know about effect of kojic acid on skin?

Short answer

Kojic acid may gradually lighten areas of excess pigmentation by reducing melanin production, but careful use and sun protection are needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How kojic acid affects skin

Kojic acid interferes with an enzyme involved in making melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. This can make dark marks look less noticeable over time, especially when the trigger for pigmentation is also controlled. It does not remove every type of mark, and uneven colour can return after sun exposure or renewed inflammation. Results vary with the formula, concentration, skin sensitivity and cause of the pigmentation.

Using it with care

Patch-test a new product on a small area and introduce it gradually. Apply only as directed, avoid broken skin and do not combine several irritating actives without professional guidance. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply as directed outdoors, because ultraviolet exposure can maintain pigmentation. Stop and seek advice if burning, swelling, blistering or a persistent rash develops.

When to seek care

A dermatologist can assess a new, changing or bleeding pigmented spot before any brightening product is used. Arrange review when pigmentation is widespread, repeatedly returning, associated with itch or inflammation, or not improving after a consistent routine. Prescription options or an in-clinic treatment may be more suitable for some causes.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what is causing the pigmentation, whether kojic acid suits your skin, which products should not be combined with it, and how to protect the treated area during outdoor exposure.

It is generally used to target uneven pigmentation rather than change the natural colour of all facial skin.
