Eczema swelling around the eyes

Eczema around the eyes can cause inflamed, itchy, swollen eyelid skin, but sudden or severe swelling needs medical assessment. The skin in this area is thin and easily irritated by cosmetics, cleansers, fragrances, rubbing, or airborne triggers. Puffiness may occur with redness, dryness, scaling, or a burning feeling.

Atopic dermatitis can affect the eyelids and the skin beside the eyes. Scratching increases irritation and can make the lids look more swollen. Darkening after inflammation may linger even when the active rash settles; this is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Swelling with crusting, tenderness, warmth, or discharge may point to infection rather than an uncomplicated flare. A clinician may also consider contact dermatitis or another eyelid condition.

Pause new eye products and avoid fragranced creams near the lids. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and apply a bland fragrance-free moisturiser suitable for the eyelid area. Do not rub or scratch; a cool clean compress can ease the urge to touch. Use only treatments recommended for the eyelids, because medicines that are suitable elsewhere may be inappropriate close to the eyes. Keep nails short and arrange a review if flares keep returning.

Seek urgent care for eye pain, vision changes, marked redness of the eye itself, fever, rapidly increasing one-sided swelling, or swelling that affects breathing. Prompt assessment is also sensible when the skin is weeping, crusted, very tender, or difficult to open. These features can signal infection, an allergic reaction, or involvement beyond the surface rash.

Ask whether the eyelid change fits atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis, which moisturiser is appropriate, and how long any eyelid medicine should be used. Mention eye symptoms, new products, and whether itching is worse at night.
