Eczema Rash: Symptoms and Next Steps

Eczema commonly causes itching, dryness, redness, swelling, fine scale, or small bumps. During a stronger flare, the skin may ooze and form crusts; repeated rubbing can make it thick and leathery. On darker skin, inflammation may look brown, purple, grey, or darker than the surrounding area rather than bright red. A rash may improve and then return when the skin barrier is disturbed.

A rash that forms a ring, follows a sharp border, centres on hairs, or appears after a new product may have another explanation. Changes left after inflammation can include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a darker flat patch.

Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then apply a thick moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Keep showers brief, avoid scrubbing, and choose soft breathable clothing. Reduce contact with known irritants such as fragranced products, harsh detergents, and rough fabrics. Keep fingernails short and use a cool compress instead of scratching. Follow prescribed treatment instructions and do not apply unprescribed products to broken skin.

Arrange medical advice when the rash is persistent, recurrent, widespread, or disturbing sleep. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening redness, warmth, swelling, pain, pus, yellow crusting, blisters, facial or eye involvement, or fever. These features can indicate infection or a condition needing different treatment.
